What Are the Types of Perfume?

Generally speaking, the main components of so-called “perfume” include water, alcohol, and fragrance compounds. Among these, the concentration of fragrance compounds determines the scent intensity and price. Perfumes sold on the market can be broadly categorized into the following five types:
1. Perfume Extract (Parfum, P)
Perfume extract is also known as “concentrated perfume.” As the name suggests, it contains a very high concentration of fragrance compounds. Generally, the fragrance composition accounts for about 20% to 40% of the total, making it the most intense and long-lasting scent. Naturally, due to the high concentration of fragrance compounds, it is also the most expensive type.
2. Eau de Parfum (EDP)
Eau de Parfum has a fragrance concentration of approximately 10% to 20%. Because of its long-lasting and rich scent, it is also referred to as “strong perfume.” Currently, Eau de Parfum is the most common type of perfume on the market. It offers the widest variety of scents and is the most widely sold perfume product.
3. Eau de Toilette (EDT)
Eau de Toilette has a lower fragrance concentration. Generally, it contains only 5% to 12% fragrance compounds, and its longevity is not as strong as the two types mentioned above. However, for beginners, its subtle and refined scent makes it particularly suitable as an entry-level fragrance.
4. Eau de Cologne (EDC)
Commonly used by men, Eau de Cologne has a fragrance concentration of about 3% to 6%. Its light, barely-there scent is particularly effective at attracting attention. For men, this恰到好处 (just right) level of fragrance can showcase a mature charm. Therefore, during blending, the fragrance ratio in Eau de Cologne is significantly reduced, allowing men to maintain a mysterious and appealing aura.
5. Eau Fraiche
Finally, there is “Eau Fraiche,” which contains only about 1% to 2% fragrance compounds. Due to its faint scent and poor longevity, it is mostly used in products like body mists or deodorant sticks. Because of the low proportion of fragrance compounds used, it is also more affordable and mass-market.
